Easy Cornmeal Pastry

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 2 cups of cornmeal
  • 2 eggs (one yolk for brushing)
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • 150 grams of butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 tea glass of vegetable oil (125 ml)
  • 3 tablespoons of yogurt
  • 1.5 teaspoons of salt

For the filling:

  • 100 grams of white cheese

For the topping:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • Sesame seeds
  • Black cumin seeds

Preparation

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the room temperature butter, vegetable oil, yogurt, eggs, salt, cornmeal, a portion of the flour, and baking powder. Start kneading the mixture. Gradually add more flour and continue kneading until the dough comes together.
  2. Transfer the dough to a work surface and divide it into four equal parts.
  3. Roll each part into a log and then divide into smaller pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and flatten it with your hands.
  4. Place a portion of the cheese filling in the center of each piece. Fold the dough over the filling and reshape into a ball.
  5. Place the prepared pastries on a baking tray. This recipe makes approximately 12 pastries, but the number can vary based on the size. You can also use any filling you prefer.
  6. Brush the tops of the pastries with the reserved egg yolk. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and black cumin seeds as desired.
  1. For better rising and even baking, make small cuts on the tops with a knife.
  2. Bake the pastries in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 30 minutes, using the top and bottom heat setting without the fan.
  3. Once baked, your cornmeal pastries are ready to serve.
