Ingredients:

  • 3 cloves garlic, grated
  • Zest and juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons Sambal Oelek (or substitute Sriracha)
  • 5 tablespoons soy sauce (or coconut aminos for a gluten-free option)
  • 1/4 cup water (or low-sodium vegetable broth)
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 15 oz super-firm or extra-firm tofu, pressed and drained well
  • Vegetable oil for cooking
  • 1-2 green onions, sliced diagonally
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
  • 1 tablespoon toasted white sesame seeds for garnish

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix grated garlic, lime zest, lime juice, toasted sesame oil, Sambal Oelek, soy sauce, water, and brown sugar until well combined.
  2. Cut the tofu into 1/2-inch cubes and place them in a shallow dish. Pour half of the sauce over the tofu and gently toss to coat. Let it marinate for 20 minutes.
  3. Optional step for crispiness: Coat the marinated tofu cubes in 2-3 tablespoons of cornstarch.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer and cook until golden and crispy on all sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add the remaining sauce. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a little water to create a slurry. Add the slurry to the sauce and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Return the tofu to the skillet and toss to coat it in the thickened sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the tofu is heated through and the sauce has caramelized slightly.
  7. Serve the garlic tofu hot, garnished with sliced green onions, chopped cilantro, and toasted white sesame seeds.
